Book Review “21st Birthday”

Synopsis: Detective Lindsay Boxer vows to protect a young woman from a serial killer long enough to see her twenty-first birthday.

When young wife and mother Tara Burke goes missing with her baby girl, all eyes are on her husband, Lucas. He paints her not as a missing person but a wayward wife—until a gruesome piece of evidence turns the investigation criminal.

While Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas pursues the story and M.E. Claire Washburn harbors theories that run counter to the SFPD’s, ADA Yuki Castellano sizes Lucas up as a textbook domestic offender . . . who suddenly puts forward an unexpected suspect. If what Lucas tells law enforcement has even a grain of truth, there isn’t a woman in the state of California who’s safe from the reach of an unspeakable threat.

This book had so much potential, but did it deliver? It delves into a series of mysterious murders, leaving readers guessing who the killer could be. Is it the husband/father of a victim, or perhaps the father of another suspect? As the body count rises and dark secrets from the past resurface, the SFPD is faced with a daunting task. Chief Clapper, the new head honcho, is under pressure to crack the case before more bodies pile up.

The story itself is a bit hit or miss. While it’s clear the author put effort into crafting intricate details, there are some glaring omissions that make it hard to suspend disbelief. The pacing is a slow burn, testing the patience of even the most dedicated readers. And let’s talk about Yuki – why is she always getting the short end of the stick? It’s time for the Murder Club to give her a break.

Despite its flaws, the story manages to keep you hooked until the very end. But there’s one thing that nags at you – why leave so many loose ends untied? A few sentences could have brought closure to those burning questions. What’s next for the Murder Club remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure – it’s bound to be a wild ride.
