Magic the Gathering The Hobbit Prerelease events
Pack your pocket-handkerchief, gather your adventuring party, and prepare for a journey to the Lonely Mountain! Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit Prerelease arrives at Three Mountain Games this weekend, giving players an early opportunity to explore Middle-earth, open new cards, and experience the set before its worldwide release.
Prerelease weekend officially begins August 7, ahead of the set’s global tabletop release. The new set brings Bilbo Baggins’ legendary adventure to Magic with familiar characters, memorable moments, dangerous creatures, and treasures worthy of Smaug’s hoard.
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit Prerelease Schedule
Three Mountain Games will host four Prerelease events throughout the weekend:
Friday, August 7 at 6:30 PM
Saturday, August 8 at 11:30 AM
Saturday, August 8 at 4:30 PM
Sunday, August 9 at 4:30 PM — Two-Headed Giant
The entry fee is $35 per player, and every participant will receive prize support.
Players are welcome to attend more than one event, giving you additional opportunities to open cards, try different strategies, and experience more of what the new set has to offer. Each event will also feature a riddle that the first person to solve will win a door prize.
What Is a Magic Prerelease?
A Prerelease is one of the most welcoming and exciting ways to experience a new Magic set. Instead of arriving with a completed deck, players open a Prerelease Pack and build a deck using the cards they receive.
Everyone is discovering the cards and mechanics at the same time, creating a casual and friendly environment that is ideal for both experienced players and those attending their first Prerelease.
You do not need to know every card or arrive with the perfect strategy. Part of the adventure is opening your cards, discovering unexpected combinations, and seeing where your journey takes you.
Team Up for Two-Headed Giant on Sunday
Our final event of the weekend will be a Two-Headed Giant Prerelease on Sunday, August 9 at 4:30 PM.
Two-Headed Giant is a team-based Magic format in which two players work together against another team. Teammates share a turn and a life total while coordinating their cards and strategies.
It is a great choice for friends, couples, family members, or anyone who would rather face the dangers of Middle-earth with a trusted companion at their side.
Players may register with a teammate. Those who do not already have a teammate can check with Three Mountain Games about finding another adventurer for the event.
Return to Middle-earth
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins and his unexpected companions as they travel toward the Lonely Mountain. Along the way, they encounter Trolls, Goblins, Elves, giant spiders, riddles in the dark, and the fearsome dragon Smaug.
The set also marks Magic’s return to Middle-earth following the popularity of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. It features artwork, characters, scenes, and mechanics inspired by some of the most memorable moments from Bilbo’s adventure.
