To Die For

Overview: Travis Devine has become a pro at accomplishing any mission he’s given. But this time it’s not his skills that send him to Seattle to aid the FBI in escorting orphaned, twelve-year-old Betsy Odom to a meeting with her uncle, who’s under federal investigation. Instead, he’s hoping to lay low and keep off the radar of an enemy—the girl on the train. But as Devine gets to know Betsy, questions begin to arise around the death of her parents. Devine digs for answers, and what he finds points to a conspiracy bigger than he could’ve ever imagined.
It might finally be time for Devine and the girl on the train to come face-to-face. Devine is going to find out the difference between his friends and his enemies—and in some cases, they might well be both.

David Baldacci’s To Die For continues the Travis Devine series with another fast-paced, high-stakes thriller that keeps the intensity moving from the very first page. After really enjoying the first two books in the series, I was excited to see where Baldacci would take Devine next—and this book did not disappoint.
Travis Devine remains a fantastic lead character. He is the kind of person who can walk into almost any fight and still have a chance of walking out alive. In To Die For, however, the danger is not just physical. Devine is dropped into a complicated situation involving a young girl whose parents are gone and whose future is uncertain. Her uncle, a known criminal, wants to adopt her and give her a better life than her parents could. The government, however, is not convinced he should have that chance—especially if the charges against him stick and he ends up behind bars for a long time.
Devine is sent in to protect the girl because of his connection to Glass, the criminal the government is trying to convict. From there, the story only gets more tangled, with shifting loyalties, dangerous secrets, and the kind of layered suspense that Baldacci does so well.
One of the strongest parts of To Die For is how it continues to build on threads from the previous Travis Devine books. The connections between the books make the series feel richer and more rewarding, especially for readers who have followed Devine from the beginning. The action is sharp, the pacing is strong, and the tension rarely lets up.
It is also great to see Travis Devine continue to grow as a character. He is still ruthless when he needs to be, and Baldacci never lets you forget how dangerous he can be. At the same time, there is a noticeable softening to him as the series goes on, giving him more depth than just being the tough guy who survives every fight.
Overall, To Die For is a great read and another strong entry in David Baldacci’s Travis Devine series. It delivers suspense, action, character development, and enough ongoing mystery to make me excited for whatever comes next. Fans of Baldacci, political thrillers, and action-heavy suspense novels should find plenty to enjoy here.
