The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Overview: It’s about the disappearance forty years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden…and about her octogenarian uncle, determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder.

It’s about Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently at the wrong end of a libel case, hired to get to the bottom of Harriet’s disappearance…and about Lisbeth Salander, a pierced and tattooed genius hacker possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age, who assists Blomkvist with the investigation. This unlikely team discover a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running thorough the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Sedish industrialism, and an unexpected connection between themselves.

It’s about society at its most hidden, and about the intimate lives of a brilliantly realized cast of characters, forced to face the darker aspects of their world and their own lives.

Let me start off by saying, do not judge this book by its cover – or its trailer. I made the mistake of assuming I knew what it was all about based on the movie previews, and boy was I wrong. The depth of this story goes way beyond what you see on the big screen.

The plot revolves around a journalist who finds himself in hot water after publishing a not-so-reliable article. He ends up in jail and has to step down from his magazine to save it. But just when things couldn’t get any worse, he receives an offer he can’t refuse – to write the family story of the powerful Vanger clan. Little does he know, this assignment is just a front for a much darker mystery – the disappearance of Harriet Vanger forty years ago.

This book is a real page-turner, taking you on a wild ride with dynamic characters driving the story forward. It kept me up way past my bedtime, and I have no regrets.

I was pleasantly surprised by the unexpected twists and turns of the story. It’s gritty, it’s gripping, and it’s definitely worth a read. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the series as soon as I can.
