The Drifter

Overview: Peter Ash came home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with only one souvenir: what he calls his “white static,” the buzzing claustrophobia due to post-traumatic stress that has driven him to spend a year roaming in nature, sleeping under the stars.

But when a friend from the Marines commits suicide, Ash returns to civilization to help the man’s widow with some home repairs. Under her dilapidated porch, he finds more than he bargained for: the largest, ugliest, meanest dog he’s ever encountered…and a Samsonite suitcase stuffed with cash and explosives.

As Ash begins to investigate this unexpected discovery, he finds himself at the center of a plot that is far larger than he could have imagined…and it may lead straight back to the world he thought he’d left for good.

This book follows the journey of Peter Ash, a Marine who bravely fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, adjusting to civilian life has proven to be a challenge for him, especially when he’s under a roof. The white static that builds in his mind serves as a constant reminder of his military past. To escape, he camps in the mountains and only ventures into town when absolutely necessary.

Out of nowhere, a volunteer makes the trek to find Peter and delivers the devastating news that his best friend has taken his own life. Without hesitation, Peter heads to Milwaukee, where his friend lived, and becomes entwined with his friend’s family. His first act of kindness? Helping them build a new porch, which leads to an unexpected discovery of a dog and a mysterious suitcase.

The story unfolds in the vibrant city of Milwaukee, keeping readers hooked with its fast-paced narrative. Mental illness and the struggles of veterans are brought to light, adding depth to the plot. While there were a few moments of confusion, the story quickly clarifies itself, keeping readers on their toes.

Overall, I couldn’t put this book down on multiple occasions, a clear sign of its captivating nature. It’s refreshing to read a story set in Milwaukee and the introduction of a new characters are seamlessly woven into the narrative. So, grab a copy, settle in, and prepare to be swept away by Peter Ash’s compelling journey.
