The Bourne Legacy Book Review

Overview: Years after the events of The Bourne Identity, Webb is no longer an active CIA agent and is now a professor of Eastern Studies at Georgetown University, living a quiet life, far from the dangers of his previous life. Until one day he finds himself the target of an assassin nearly as skilled as himself and is framed for the brutal murder of his two closest associates and friends. Fighting for his life against unseen assailants, as well as the full resources of the CIA who believe he has gone dangerously rogue, the Bourne identity asserts itself, leaving Jason Bourne in control. Now Bourne must use all his skills to stay alive as he battles against a determined assassin, the combined skills of the world’s intelligence networks, and a shadowy figure in the background, skillfully manipulating events and people, in a far deadlier and more dangerous game than any of them realize.

I find myself diving into these books out of sheer curiosity. With a new author taking the reins, I was hoping for a bit of a spark. The story follows Bourne, now living as David Webb, with his Bourne persona in the rearview mirror. All is well until a sniper takes a shot at him, followed by being framed for the murder of his two closest pals. With his resources cut off, Bourne finds himself on the run with various forces hot on his trail.

The issue I have with this book is the abundance of plot holes. The main character seems to take the most illogical path possible, making his life unnecessarily difficult. The author wants us to suspend our disbelief, not to allow the impossible, but to give Bourne a run for his money. It was tough for me to take the book seriously when it was built on such a shaky foundation.

Overall, the early plot holes were hard to overlook, causing this book to fall short compared to its predecessors. Here’s hoping the new author, Erick Van Lustbader, finds his groove in the next installment and brings Bourne back to his rightful glory.
