Batman Dead White
Overview: There’s a host of deadly new weapons in Batman’s glittering, sinister city – and they’re in the hands of a psychotic mastermind called White Eyes. With his murderous arsenal in place, the fiendish leader of Gotham’s racist Bavarian Brotherhood can move beyond dealing drugs and hot guns to pursue his real passion: the white supremacist takeover of America.
The homegrown terrorists’ first strike – at the heart of our nation’s capital – is only weeks away. But first they’ll test our their killer toys on Batman, who is hot on the trail of White Eyes and his brutal militia. As a self-proclaimed Batman aficionado, I must say that one of the main reasons I’ve always been drawn to the Caped Crusader is his rogues gallery of villains. However, the antagonist in this particular book falls short of the epic foes Batman has faced in the past.
While the story starts off a bit sluggish, it picks up momentum as it progresses. My one gripe is that the majority of the action takes place outside of Gotham City. Nevertheless, I appreciate the modern touch of including cell phones in the narrative.
I found it intriguing how the author delves into the psychological aspects of Batman and his constant struggle with maintaining his secret identity. Once you push through the initial chapters, the book becomes a real page-turner. John Shirley does a commendable job of creating characters that evoke genuine emotions and concern.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to any die-hard Batman fan. It’s a thrilling read that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
