Astonishing X-Men Vol 12 Unmasked

Overview: Through tick and thin, from marriage to apocalypse, these X-men stood together.  But bonds are broken and loyalties tested as the series barrels toward its astonishing conclusion.

After she incites an international incident and is declared an enemy combatant by S.H.I.E.L.D.,  Warbird goes on the lam in Cairo.  As she seeks out an ancient artifact with ties to her alien race, the Shi’ar, the deadly soldier will stop at nothing to unravel its secrets – even if it puts her team at risk.  Then, a catastrophic storm buries much of the norther hemisphere under the deadly weight of snow, creating a kingdom where only one man rules, Bobby Drake.  But when Iceman’s mind becomes fragmented and lost, who will stop his reign of terror?

Here I am 12 volumes into the series.  That is a lot of books.  Along the way, it has lost its way many times.  This final volume takes it to a whole new level of lost.  Even from panel to panel, it seems to lose its way.  The biggest portion of this volume follows Ice Man and his struggles.  It seemed a shame to have this much story take place and have developed so many characters to spend so much focus on this one character.   The story just seems to be missing something and seems to do things without really explaining why that is happening. The story is not all that great. This is made worse by some sub par artwork in this book. The style is just not my favorite and it seems to be worse in this collection that in other collections.

Overall, I just struggled with this book.  It built up that a major event was going to take place.  That major event was a bit of a let-down.  It also was a let-down that after all this group has gone through, it really does not give the series a proper send off.
