Axiom Function – Longshot
Longshot functions are selected from all manner Axiotie citizenry, and they are often particularly difficult both to properly identify and to train once located. Once can never quite know for certain when a particular user will demonstrate the raw ability to become a Longshot, nor from where that individual will emerge. Axiom Agents remain continuously vigilant in their ministrations to the public with the dual agenda not only to serve to public, but also to keep a watchful eye over the odd subject that shows the astonishing combination of characteristics suggestive of this function-class. The Agents have been instructed to do so largely because there is genuine threat and profound potential in these individuals. These are lethal and unpredictable minds.
There is as much art as training in the manner of the Longshot interface. The keen ability all of these individuals demonstrate to project their mental aptitude across great distances can only be taught to a modest extent. The rest manifests as pure instinct, and the best of these potent mentalists seems simply to be born with the precise and cruel talent to lash out in extraordinary ways. As such, they are often innately resistant to institutional values and to formal instruction. These individuals tend to abhor crowds in preference of cold isolation. The most extreme cases demand distance from all but the most trusted intimates, with whom they interact only in a limited capacity. They have little need for the machinations of the Axiom organization to cultivate their skills. As such, many Axiom officials hope only to offer as many “useful” opportunities for these rare specimens to exercise their ability. One hopes only that these introverts are directed in manner that works toward Axiomite goals….rather than against them.
Indeed, there is near rabid antisocial behavior that almost invariably accompanies the psychological skills that make the Longshot so potent and thus wild. The training of the Longshot, therefore, remains inconsistent and spotty – a fact that makes these weapons unpopular to the Axiom ministrators that prefer merciless order and self-sacrifice. Nevertheless, their potency cannot be denied and remains essential to much of the Axioms agenda within the Aetherium.
