Aetherium – Axiom – AgentThe Agent-class Function is intimately linked to both the militarized and the secular order of the Axiom officiate. Agents operate with a direct mandate from the Ministry of Resolution, which is unique among Axiom orders in that it is frequented as often as the likes of Pontifect Neuholm as by Prime Commandant Spyder. Thus, Agent operatives must answer to all avenues of power within the Axiom universe. It is a position few would admire, but the Ministry of Resolution acts as an essential connection point in the Axiom plan for order and control.

In these matters, the agents are known to be inexhaustible in pursuit of the agenda.

Agents tend to harbor commitment that borders compulsion, and their motto – No Mystery May Withstand a Lifetime of Service – only beings to suggest their complete dedication to the cause. They view their lives as forfeit to whichever task they have been assigned. And for this reason, Axiom Agents will quite often pursue their targets both in and out of the Aetherium. When a lead takes them back into the material world, Agents are routinely expected simply to disengage and, with incredible efficiency, pick up the trail directly in the waking world, only to dive once more in the profound neurological depths of the Aetherium.

Because of the doubled nature of their vocation, Agents are also rather curiously unique in that a majority of their number prefer to manifest in the Aetherium as recognizably themselves. Most individuals disguise or improve or otherwise embellish their identity in some manner and, of course, all Agents don the basic software and wetware aspects appropriate to their rank and office, however, it is increasingly common to find that Agents will label their programming in order to ensure that citizenry they encounter in the Aetherium will also be able to recognize them should they meet in the material world, and vice versa. The odds are slim that this would happen, but the practice is as much a statement. Agents cast off the anonymity afforded by this vast virtual reality and engage friend and enemy with a rare, often brutal, directness.

The Agents life is lonely and demanding, without doubt, and for this reason they are rumored to burnout with alarming frequency – to fry their synapses in just a few lifetimes of work while plugged in. Once an agent’s synapses reach terminal capacity, however, the Agent often simply shifts back into the material world with unhesitating vigor and familiar determination.
