Axiom Function – Adept
Culled almost exclusively from the privileged ranks of the bureaucratic classes, the Adept is breed of hacker that has demonstrated at some point in his or her career three essential characteristics: raw psychological proficiency, responsiveness to instruction, and brutal devotion to order.
Although the criteria remain impenetrable, the Adepts are rumored to be hand-selected by Regional Pontifects directly from the psychosomic training schools. Invariably, said selections heralds a blessing and a terrible curse. Participation is compulsory and, once located, the adepts-in-training are unceremoniously swept away to one of the several secretive locations. Few are ever heard from again. Once there, the young prodigies are stripped of every molecule of their former identity. In the maeterium, they are shaved and placed in monastic isolation from the greater physical world, a world that they are unlikely to know in any capacity ever again. In the Aetherium they are subjected to brutal ehtolog-data training that creates in the subject a relentless psychological precision. Their life becomes one of isolation and anonymity, even to one another. Only the highest echelons of Axiom Order can access their identities.
As an essential and rigorous part of their education, the young Adept must refine his or her “talents” in a manner that layers one’s psyche so complexly that these individuals often become wholly sinister. Though they are known to be numerous, the individuality is denied such that they emerge as essentially one horrifically feared entity, one singular mind, within the Aetherium, They are avoided with a reckless terror.
If the Axiom elite fails to care about the Adepts as individuals, few fail to see their value in the Aetherium. Rarely will and Axiomite Avatar enter the Aetherial world without at least one Adept counted among the entourage. To the powers that be, the Adepts represent the sharpest edge of principle, the most essential and efficient expression of the sacrifice of individual talent to the social order. Their minds are like scalpels, a most useful to the interrogating operative.
In particular, the Adepts endure extraordinary training in matters of Maeterail and Aetherial interface – those essential points of transference between the two modes of existence. The most brilliant among them will work intimately within that interface and will be capable of extreme feats of conversion or protection or of psychological stasis within the Aehterium.
Successful Adepts may eventually progress through the bureaucratic ranks and re-emerge from monastic isolation, where they are rumored to enjoy a life of relative prosperity and comfort, perhaps even excessively so, however, as the previous identity will have remained utterly obscured, few can cay for certain who has graduated from the Adept ranks and who has not. You may life in the same hab-lock as an Adept Functionary. Undeniably there is power, threat, and menace in that particular curious silence.
