You might be wondering what this is. It is part collectable game and part video game. Well, more video game with pieces that can be swapped out. I am going to talk mostly about the basic set but want to mention that there are other sets that allow you to expand the game. The basic game that you get includes Sully from Monsters University, Jack Sparrow from Pirates, and Mr. Incredible from the Incredibles. Each piece can be played in their own adventure area, such as Mr. Incredible is in a large city fighting robots, Jack Sparrow cruises around on a ship and does adventures on the high sea as well as on land. Sully has plenty of adventures on his University. You might think that with multiple worlds, each one would be fairly small, but that is not the case. Each world has multiple areas. For example, Monsters University has the main university, Frat row, and even the arch enemy Fear Tech campus. The missions are geared more for a younger crowd, but my young son also enjoys them. Each world also has challenges that can be performed in addition to the missions. They range from races to item collection. You can also play in what is called the toybox. This is a customizable area that allows you to build your own world to play on. As you play, you unlock more and more pieces that you can use in the toybox. You can also download toyboxes that others have designed that have been approved by Disney. They are also fun and are often themed. Each character also has its own adventure that you can play, they also tend to be fairly fun but to a degree get old faster than most of the rest of the game options. There are also mastery missions that teach you how to play the game and how to design worlds. The final place to visit is the Hall of Heroes, this area lets you see previews of all the characters and as you level your characters the Hall grows with them. The statues change color as you level, and the building structure also grows as you level your characters. If I have one complaint, it is that this is geared to be a money pit. Granted you can have plenty of fun with just the base set, but if you want to play a 2 player game in any of the main 3 worlds you will have to pick up a character from the matching world. Some of these characters can be purchased individually, but others have to be purchased in a set that may not include characters you will want. The menu can sometimes be hard to navigate as you have to log into the toybox to get to some of the options even though you may not want to be in the toybox, so it just slows down getting to where you want to be. I also wanted to mention that the pieces and the base are well put together. Fairly solid for younger hands. The weakness we found was the disc which my son did break and the only way to get a replacement is to take the whole thing back and hope that it can be exchanged. Disney themselves wanted to charge me $40 for a replacement disc, since it is not available by itself. They were also fairly slow getting back to me on what my options
Overall, this still is a great game that has so many game options that sometimes I forget all the features. As an adult, there are plenty of missions and such that are challenging enough to keep me entertained. The ability to build a world of my own also was very entertaining. Making this even better, it has been fun to play with my young son, who has grown into the game and has grown his collection of figures that he enjoys swapping out. Just good for all ages.
