Tips and Tricks
LIVES – You start out with 3 lives. Don’t waste them. You can’t get them back.
MAIN PARK – You start out the game in the MAIN PARK. This is just a general area where you skate around in and practice your killer skate moves. From the Main Park, you have to go to certain events. If you are uncertain of where the different events are located, just skate over the “MAP” icon and you can view the map which will tell you where to skate to get to each unique event. Be sure to avoid the thugs, motocycle maniacs, frisbee throwers, and all other neusances to a skateboarder.
EVENT TICKETS – You will begin the game with 3 different EVENT TICKETS. These Event tickets will let you get into the different EVENTS, which are listed below. There are 4 different Events. Since you only have 3 Event Tickets, you must rack up points to earn the last ticket to get into the final event. As described in the manual for this game:
Downhill – This event is filled with hairpin curves, in a course built on stilts over water. As you skate downhill you must jump from one section of the course to the next without missing a turn. Arrows at the end of each ramp section tell you which way the course is going to turn. As you sail off the end of one ramp, turn in the direction of the next ramp to land. if you think you’re good enough, try a spin or two for extra points. The number of points needed for the next event ticket is shown at the bottom of the screen. An indicator bar at the top of the screen shows the time remaining, and weather you’re eligible for a bronze, silver, or gold medal. The time bar starts off in the “gold” range (“G”), and gradually decreases to “silver” (“S”), bronze (“B”), and then to no medal at all.
Jump – You’ll need quick reflexes and a great sense of timing to get through this course. As you speed down the ramps, watch out for water hazards at the bottom. When you reach the end of one ramp, press the A Button to jump to the next one. If you land successfully, you’ll earn points. Get extra points by doing spins and jumps on your way down and by landing on bonus markers that can be found near the water hazards. A countdown timer appears at the bottom of the screen, along with the number of points needed for the next event ticket. An indicator bar at the top of the screen increases as you earn points to show if you’re eligible for a bronze, silver, or gold medal.
Ramp – Ready to tame the wild concrete tidal wave? You have only a short time to get as many points as you can by showing off your awesome moves. As you skate up the side of the ramp, prepare to soar through the air and twist around for a perfect spin or a cool handstand–this is where you show everyone what you’ve really got. A countdown timer appears at the bottom of the screen, along with the number of points needed for the next event ticket. An indicator bar at the top of the screen increases as you earn points to show if you’re eligible for a bronze, silver, or gold medal.
Slalom – Fly down a flag-filled course built over water, weaving your way through a series of gates. You must go through all the gates (that is, between each set of flags) to win the event. Every time you go through a gate, the flags change color and time is added to the clock. If you pass through a gate correctly the flags will turn yellow. If you miss a gate and pass through the next one, the flags of the gate you missed will turn blue. If you go through a gate in the wrong direction (upward), those flags will turn blue. More time is added to the clock for yellow flags than for blue ones. The number of points needed for the next event ticket is shown at the bottom of the screen. An indicator bar at the top of the screen shows the time remaining, and whether you’re eligible for a bronze, silver, or gold medal.
BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD – After each Event you are in, in addition to getting points, you will also be given a rank based on how quickly you finished that event. They are Gold, Silver, or Bronze. Obviously you get GOLD for being the quickest, SILVER for being quick, BRONZE for being average, and you will recieve no medal for being slow.
CASH – You start out with $100. You can earn more money by finding it randomly on the sidewalk and skating over it, or by competing and doing well in the events. Use your CASH at the four various SHOPS located around the Main Park.
SHOPS – There are 4 various SHOPS located around the MAIN PARK. Skate to these different shops and you purchase different/upgraded equipment. Different types of equipment includes boards, helmets, shoes, and pads. Each of the four shops is devoted to a different one of these items. As described in the manual for this game:
Skateboard Shop – Buy a skateboard that lets you jump higher and score more points.
Helmet Shop – With a new helmet, you’ll be protected when you fall and it wont take you so long to recover from bumps and bruises.
Shoe Shop – Really burn rubber in a new pair of ultimate high tops. With shoes like these, nothing will stand in your way.
Pad Shop – Hey, you can never be too careful! With pads on your knees and elbows, you can skid into just about anything without getting hurt.
POINTS – The points here are like the points in Who’s Line. They don’t matter. Still, you can earn them if you feel the urge to. Points can be earned by doing well in the special events, and by performing various tricks and maneuvers in the Main Park.
1 Spin – 100 points
2 Spin – 200 points
3 Spin – 300 points
4 Spin – 400 points
SKATE OR DIE – Not to be mistaken for the NES game with the same name, when you see the “Skate or Die” text appear, hurry up and get to an even fast! If you see this text and take too long to get to an event, a random swarm of bees will come out of nowhere and sting you to knock you down. Usually when you see this just skate to the next event and you will be fine.
Walkthrough
You start out the game in the MAIN PARK. There are various obstacles, jumps, ramps, pools, cars, roads, and just about everything here in the Main Park. If you are not familiar with the game, take a moment to skate around a little bit so that you have the feel of the game. When you jump, be sure you land the same way you started or you’ll fall down. See about doing a full rotation in the air, by quickly rotating the D-pad and ending pressing the direction that you started. Then see if you can do two rotations. Et cetera. Unfortunately this game does not allow you to practice for too long, or the screen will say “SKATE OR DIE” and a swarm of killer bees will attack you. But you will have *some* time to practice, and you should take advantage of that. This is what the Map looks like. When you are ready, skate to an Event.
When you are ready to compete in an event, go ahead and do so. It doesn’t really matter which event you try first, that’s up to you. Then compete in a 2nd event, and then a 3rd event. If you have scored well enough in the first 3 Events, you will have raked in enough points to go on to the 4th and final event. Like I already mentioned, it does NOT matter which 3 events you compete in first, and which one you save for last. I am giving you the freedom to make that decision. However, you absolutely MUST score enough points in the first 3 Events or you will not be able to get the ticket to enter the 4th and final event.
DOWNHILL
The DOWNHILL event is located in the top left corner of the Map Screen. If you wish to proceed to this event, skate into that direction, and give the lady the Event Ticket. You will then start the Downhill event. When you get to Downhill, simply skate downwards. This really isn’t hard at all to finish quickly and get the GOLD medal. Just be sure to hold the D-Pad in the direction that the arrows point to when you are switching ramps. With any skill at all you will get the GOLD medal here and some extra cash to spend too.
RAMP
The RAMP event is located in the top right corner of the Map Screen. If you wish to proceed to this event, skate into that direction, and give the lady the Event Ticket. You will then start the Ramp event. The RAMP mode works a bit differently than the other 3 Events. This one is hard to get a respectable medal for due to the fact that it’s so freaking hard to perform tricks in this game. You need to skate on a Half-pipe and do tricks to get points and boost up your medal. What you need to do is hold B AS SOON as you get into the air, and let it go just as you land. I find this the easiest way to successfully get points. You can get 200 points each time this way. Do it every time and you’ll likely walk away with a silver or a gold medal.
JUMP
The JUMP event is located in the bottom left corner of the Map Screen. If you wish to proceed to this event, skate into that direction, and give the lady the Event Ticket. You will then start the Jump event. The Jump is well….a jump. A single measley jump. You go down a ramp and launch off a ramp, and you have to do something cool in the air. There is a pool of water underneath the jump which you should clear. If you do anything cool at all you should walk away with at least a Bronze medal.
SLALOM
The SLALOM event is located in the top left corner of the Map Screen. If you wish to proceed to this event, skate into that direction, and give the lady the Event Ticket. You will then start the Slalom event. In Slalom, simply rush down the ramp as fast as you can, but be sure you skate through the 8 sets of flags that are set up. If you successfully go through a set of flags it will turn yellow. If you miss it will turn blue. This part of the game is somewhat buggy, sometimes you can just skate *near* the flags and you’ll get credit for going through them. If you miss a flag you’ll be penalized time. Get to the end quickly enough and you’ll get a Gold medal easily.
After you complete all 4 of these events, assuming you scored well enough in them, you will move up to CLASS 2. Continue to do this all the way up until you have reached CLASS 4. Then you will have beaten the game. You will get a plain black screen that simply says “Class Finished” in plain white letters. A hell of an ending for sure. Hooray.
