Due to a poorly received test screening, David Ellison, a financier at Paramount, became concerned that the film was “too intellectual” and “too complicated,” and demanded changes to make it appeal to a wider audience, including making Portman’s character more sympathetic and changing the ending. Producer Scott Rudin sided with Garland in his desire to not alter the film, defending the film and refusing to take notes. Rudin had final cut.

During an attack by a bear, one character is shown to be bitten on the left shoulder by the creature, and it is mentioned in behind the scenes footage. However, in the next scenes, the character shows no outward sign of injury on their affected shoulder, such as scratches, blood, or bandages.

Characters repeatedly emphasize that going back along the shoreline would be easier. It would then have made more sense to send armored motorcades straight to the lighthouse instead of repeatedly sending soldiers to their deaths by crossing the wasteland on foot. It would then have been also possible to use wired communication devices instead of doomed radio-based walkies-talkies.
