Accrington Harvest Festival

Date: The first full moon after the Autumn Equinox.

Duration: Three days, beginning with the Opening Ceremony on the first day and concluding with the Grand Feast on the third day.

Location: Various locations around Accrington, including the town square, the meadows outside town, and the magical forest bordering the fields.

Festival Overview:

The Accrington Harvest Festival celebrates the hard work of the farmers, the blessings of the land, and the power of nature to nurture both body and spirit. Though the event is a time of joy, there are always whispers about the “Harvest Moon,” a time when magical creatures, long-forgotten spirits, and ancient forces come into play. This year, the festival seems to have more energy than usual, and strange occurrences are already beginning to happen…

Notable Events and Activities:

1. The Grand Harvest Parade

  • Location: Main Street of Accrington.
  • Description: The festival kicks off with a grand parade that features floats made of hay bales, pumpkins, and colorful autumn leaves. The procession is led by Martha the Baker herself, her cart pulled by a team of friendly goats, bringing bread and pies to share with everyone. The townsfolk dress in vibrant costumes, some with autumnal themes and others representing mythical creatures or harvest spirits.
  • NPC Interaction: As the parade passes, the party is invited to join in the revelry. Local performers (jugglers, fire-breathers, and bards) entertain the crowd, while others offer them unique food or trinkets that might have magical properties.

2. The Harvest Games

  • Location: The meadow on the outskirts of town.
  • Description: A series of fun and competitive games are held for both the young and old alike. The games include:
    • Pumpkin Toss: Teams compete to toss large pumpkins as far as they can. The pumpkins are enchanted to become slightly lighter after each throw, making it more difficult to predict how far they will travel.
    • Hay Bale Maze: A twisting maze made from stacked hay bales that changes every time you enter. The magical maze is said to test one’s cunning and luck.
    • Cornfield Sprint: A race through the local cornfields, where the stalks have been subtly enchanted to grow in strange, twisting patterns that challenge the runners.
  • NPC Interaction: The festival’s high spirits allow the party to interact with the locals. Some competitors may be looking for a little magical help or sabotage from the party to secure victory, while others may invite them to join in for fun or honor.

3. The Moonlit Dance

  • Location: The Town Square, transformed for the night.
  • Description: As night falls, the town square is lit with hundreds of glowing lanterns and dancing lights. The townspeople and festival-goers gather for a lively dance beneath the moonlit sky. The dancing is accompanied by a magical fiddle player whose tunes seem to come to life, causing everyone who participates to feel a sense of joy and abandon. Local druids sometimes join in, weaving magical energy through the dances that can cause unexpected results—such as causing nearby plants to bloom or lighting up the night in bursts of colorful fireflies.
  • NPC Interaction: A local druid, perhaps even the town’s chief druid, might ask the party to participate in the dance for a ritual blessing. The moonlight has an enchantment that can grant small fortunes or magical luck to those who dance properly. Some of the townsfolk also may have secrets to reveal during the festivities, but only if approached at the right time.

4. The Harvest Feast

  • Location: Accrington’s main banquet hall, or open-air near the town square.
  • Description: On the third day, the entire town gathers for a magnificent feast to celebrate the harvest. Baskets and tables are laden with freshly baked bread, pies, stews, roasted meats, fruit, and much more. The festival culminates with the ceremonial Golden Pumpkin Pie, which is said to bring prosperity and good health to the community for the coming year. This dish is cooked by Martha herself, and it’s rumored that she adds a special, magical ingredient that makes the pie taste like whatever the eater needs most (happiness, comfort, or even courage).
  • NPC Interaction: The feast is an excellent opportunity for the party to meet important NPCs from nearby regions, such as traders, adventurers, and influential figures. There’s also the chance for the party to be awarded an honorary feast dish, which grants a boon depending on the type of food (e.g., bread for strength, pie for wisdom, etc.). The more they participate in the meal and help with the event, the more likely they are to gain favor with the locals or perhaps even receive a special gift from Martha herself.

5. The Harvest Moon Ritual

  • Location: The nearby magical forest or an ancient stone circle near the town.
  • Description: On the final evening of the festival, as the Harvest Moon reaches its peak, the druids perform a ritual in the forest to bless the land and ensure the fertility of the crops for the coming year. However, this year’s ritual might be disturbed. Strange magical creatures, such as fae or mischievous forest spirits, might interfere with the ceremony, seeking to steal the blessings or alter the outcome for their own purposes. The party may be asked to help ensure the ritual goes smoothly, possibly venturing into the forest to recover a stolen sacred relic or confront the rogue magic.
  • NPC Interaction: The party could encounter a mysterious fae or spirit who offers them a riddle or challenge in exchange for the success of the ritual. Alternatively, a dark force might be trying to disrupt the ritual, and the party must protect the druids as they perform their sacred duties.

Additional Points of Interest:

  • The Traveling Merchant’s Cart: A wandering merchant appears during the festival, selling magical items, enchanted trinkets, and rare harvest ingredients. They might have a mysterious item that will prove useful for an upcoming adventure.

  • The Witch’s Brew Stand: An eccentric old woman runs a potion stall, offering brews that change your appearance, give temporary abilities, or even transport you into a dream world for a brief time. Though harmless in most cases, there are rumors that one or two of her potions have unforeseen side effects.

  • The Old Oak Tree: At the center of the festival grounds is an ancient oak tree, believed to be the home of a powerful nature spirit. The tree is decorated with ribbons and charms by the villagers, and some say it can grant wishes to those who whisper their desires to it on the night of the Harvest Moon.

Possible Plot Hooks:

  1. Strange Harvest: The crops have begun growing in unexpected and magical ways. A local farmer has reported that his fields have sprouted glowing, strange fruits, and some of the harvested produce has strange powers. The party is asked to investigate the mysterious phenomenon and ensure the crops haven’t been cursed.

  2. Disrupted Ritual: The Harvest Moon Ritual is being interrupted by a dark force or rival faction, and the party must protect the druids or stop the entity causing havoc before the town’s prosperity is threatened.

  3. Fae Mischief: Fae creatures have begun causing chaos during the festival, either by stealing harvest goods or causing pranks that have escalated to dangerous levels. The party is hired by the town’s leaders to stop the fae from ruining the festivities.

  4. The Missing Ingredient: Martha’s magical ingredient for the Golden Pumpkin Pie has gone missing, and the festival’s success hinges on finding it. The party must track it down, only to discover it has been taken by a magical creature with a taste for baked goods.

The Accrington Harvest Festival is a time of joy, magic, and mystery, where the community comes together to celebrate the bounty of nature and the blessings of the Harvest Moon. Whether the party is helping with a ritual, competing in games, or unraveling magical mysteries, they’re sure to have a memorable experience at this festive occasion.
