A Christmas special episode. It starts right out with a shopper that struggles to stay nice when everyone else is such a jerk. Until her ability to be pleasant ends and everyone gets it. We also have someone that is blue over the season in more ways than one. Who would have thought a toothache would cause such a problem. Maddie also is still struggling with the events that happened in the last episode. That event has made her face the events that happened between her and her late husband. The situation he put her in. She might have finally put that to rest. We also get a kid that has to do CPR on his mom until the paramedics arrive. With no family to go to, he must go to a group home. As an advocate for the foster care system, I appreciate it when a show gets the struggles the system face right. This story line made me sad as it is more common than any of us care to admit and so often the kids blame themselves. Finally, Bobbie gets let in on some news that is going to create a lot of concern in his family. Lucky for everyone, his family is one of the most understanding families on the planet, so I am sure they will get through it. If only we all could be as good as they are.

Overall, I have a hard time giving criticism to this episode. They did a good job showing the struggles of the foster care system. The line that Karen says “there is more than one way to build a family”, this is something that we have said, and we have done just that. From there, it was good to see a few stories wrap up and a few new stories emerge. I suspect there is going to be a fair amount of drama in the second half of this season.
