For the theatrical run, a small cough could be heard during the opening Sony logo. It was taken out of the DVD and Bluray releases to prevent viewers from thinking someone was in their home.
Kurt Russell mentioned that his son Wyatt Russell turned down a role for The Hunger Games sequels to star in this movie.
During the parents weekend luncheon, Mrs. Dickson mentions that she’s “straight outta Compton,” paying homage to the 1988 album that put Ice Cube and his hip hop group NWA on the map.
During the car chase on campus, the action in one particular scene is sped up and a tune similar to “Yakety Sax”, the iconic music from The Benny Hill Show (1969), can be heard. In the background, the building title reads “Benjamin Hill Institute for Film Studies”
During the Spring Break scene in Puerto Mexico, a club/restaurant is called “Gringos Pendejos” which roughly translates as “Stupid Americans”.

As Schmidt and Jenko move into their dorm room, you can see the numbers 322. It’s a reference to Yale’s Skull and Bones society, which met in seclusion behind a door numbered 322.
Following the poetry slam scene, Maya later compares Schmidt to poet Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou died on May 28, 2014, just two weeks prior to this film’s release.
Goofs
While driving a football helmet golf cart onto the football field, the “faceguard” of the inflated helmet is torn off and destroyed. As soon as the bad guys exit the helmet the “faceguard” is back again.
Schmidt has problems driving the Lamborghini, especially with shifting/using the clutch. The Lamborghini shown doesn’t have a manual gearbox, so there is no clutch to be operated. A simple pull on two paddles behind the steering wheel changes the gears.
The events of the movie take place during spring, yet the university is shown playing football games. With the exception of bowl games, college football ends in November.
During the climatic fight, one of the goons fires 11 (at least) shots out of a 1911 without reloading. The 1911 can only hold 8 rounds in a standard magazine.
